Evaxion ingår samarbete med MSD för vaccinutveckling
Evaxion Biotech ingick ett samarbete med ett ledande läkemedelsbolag i höstas för utvecklingen av ett vaccin mot en bakteriepatogen som orsakar allvarliga hälsoproblem. Nyligen fick vi veta att partnern är MSD och att de inledande faserna av samarbetet har varit framgångsrika. BioStock kontaktade Evaxions vd, Christian Kanstrup, för att få veta mer.
Evaxion Biotech strävar efter att utveckla nya terapier för att rädda och förbättra liv. Bolaget använder artificiell intelligens (AI) för utveckling av riktad immunoterapi, inklusive precisionscancervacciner och vacciner mot infektionssjukdomar.
Kärnan i Evaxions utvecklingsstrategi är AI-Immunology, bolagets egenutvecklade AI-plattform för upptäckt och utveckling av AI-mål. Genom denna teknologi har Evaxion redan tagit fram två cancervaccinkandidater som befinner sig i klinisk utveckling, EVX-01 och EVX-02. Läs mer här.
Siktar på en ny affärsstrategi
I september 2023 rekryterade Evaxions styrelse Christian Kanstrup till ny vd för att ge mer fart åt bolagets utveckling och för att bättre utnyttja den starka grunden inom AI-teknologi. Rekryteringen syftade specifikt till att accelerera den strategiska utvecklingen och genomförandet av affärsmöjligheterna i Evaxion.
Enligt Kanstrup, som besökte BioStock Studio i december för att diskutera bolagets affärsstrategi, kommer Evaxion att fokusera på värdeskapande genom en affärsmodell med tre huvudpelare, där AI-Immunology-plattformen utgör kärnan. De tre pelarna är Targets, Pipeline och Responders – som positionerar bolaget för partnerskap. Läs mer här.
Partnerskap med MSD
Strax efter Kanstrup hade utsetts till ny vd tillkännagav Evaxion två nya stora samarbeten. Det ena med Afrigen Biologics, som syftar till att utveckla ett profylaktiskt vaccin mot gonorré. Det andra samarbetet är med ett stort, vid tidpunkten ej kommunicerat läkemedelsbolag, för utveckling av ett nytt vaccin för att skydda mot en ospecificerad bakteriell patogen.
Förra veckan stod det klart att samarbetet är med MSD (Merck & Co.). De två bolagen har gått samman för att arbeta med ett nytt projekt, kallat EVX-B3. Projektet går ut på att använda Evaxions AI-immunologiplattform för antigenupptäckt i arbetet med att utveckla ett nytt bakteriellt vaccin.
Tarit Mukhopadhyay, Vice President, Head of Infectious Diseases and Vaccine Discovery på MSD, kommenterade samarbetet:

EVX-B3 är bolagets tredje projekt som syftar till att utveckla nya bakteriella vacciner. De andra två kandidaterna, EVX-B1 och EVX-B2, är under utveckling för att skydda mot två av de farligaste bakterierna, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) och Neisseria Gonorrhoea.

I tillkännagivandet om MSD-samarbetet nämnde Kanstrup att de första faserna av samarbetet har slutförts framgångsrikt. BioStock kontaktade Kanstrup för att få veta mer.
Christian, why is MSD the most suitable partner for this type of project?
– With MSD being a world leader in vaccines, it is, of course, a very strong partner given their capabilities within vaccine development and commercialization, hence you can say it is a natural choice.
Specifically, what does MSD bring to the table in this collaboration?
– MSD brings invaluable insights into the pathogen and the associated disease to the collaboration; the company has a profound understanding of and expertise within clinical development of prophylactic vaccines. Their deep understanding enhances our collaborative efforts, complementing our expertise in vaccine target discovery and design.
You have announced that the first phase of this collaboration has been completed successfully. Can you disclose any more details about this part of the project?
– We have successfully applied our validated AI-Immunology platform and identified several druggable vaccine targets that are predicted to prevent infections from the pathogen. These AI-identified targets are currently being manufactured, and the next steps of the collaboration involve preclinical testing of these vaccine targets.
When will we learn more details about project, including the indication being targeted?
– We will of course ensure updates on the project at relevant milestones. You should be looking at completion and hopefully an out-license agreement with MSD in less than 12 months.
Finally, how does this collaboration fit into Evaxion’s refined business strategy?
– The MSD partnership is fully in line with our refined business strategy. Our three-pronged business strategy is based upon a multi-partner approach along the three pillars: Targets, Pipeline and Responders. The MSD partnership is a very good example of the type of partnerships we are pursuing within the Target pillar, aiming to discover and develop novel vaccines addressing severe unmet medical needs.
