Lundabolaget Carbiotix har under det senaste halvåret startat sin första storskaliga produktion av CarbiAXOS inför lanseringen i höst. Bolaget har även stärkt kassan och genomfört förändringar i organisationen för den kommande kommersialiseringen. Exempelvis antog Stephen Bromley, bolagets Chief Technical Officer, även rollen som Chief Sciencific Officer. BioStock fick en pratstund med Bromley om årets första halvår och vad som ligger i fokus för honom just nu.

Foodtech-bolaget Carbiotix utvecklar prebiotiska fibrer i livsmedel, kosttillskott, medicinsk mat och i medicinska behandlingar. Dessa ska öka kroppens motståndskraft mot skadliga angrepp som kan orsaka inflammatoriska sjukdomar i tarmen och andra sjukdomstillstånd.

Produktionsanläggningen igång

Produktionskapaciteten vid anläggningen i Bjuv uppgår initialt till 10 ton per år, men ambitionen är att inom kort nå 50 ton per år och om några år kunna producera mer än 100 ton årligen. En del av den inledande produktionen är tänkt att ingå som ingrediens i svenska FibreHighs fibertillskott CoffeeBooster. Stärkta finanser och förändrad organisation

De finansiella resurserna att utöka produktionskapaciteten och genomföra lanseringen säkerställde Carbiotix under andra kvartalet med en kapitalrunda om 16 Mkr och teckningsoptioner som kan inbringa ytterligare 20-40 Mkr under 2023. För andra kvartalet redovisade bolaget en rörelseförlust om 3,6 Mkr och kassabehållningen uppgick vid halvårsskiftet till 13,6 Mkr.

Det är inte bara finanserna som har stärkts under året, bolaget har genomfört förändringar i organisationen för att stå redo för den kommande kommersialiseringen. Försäljningschefen Erik Deaner utsågs till Chief Operating Officer och ska leda och överse bolagets samtliga operativa verksamheter.

Under våren klev dr Richard A Rosenbloom in som Chief Medical Officer från att tidigare ha varit rådgivare till Carbiotix. Rosenbloom kommer bl.a. att fokusera på produktutveckling, medicinska och regulatoriska frågor.

Ytterligare en följd av organisationsförändringarna var att bolagets Chief Technical Officer (CTO), Stephen Bromley, även tog rollen som Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) när Peter Falck lämnade sitt uppdrag Falck, en av huvudägarna och som varit CSO i åtta år, sitter kvar i styrelsen och kommer att fungera som rådgivare till Carbiotix framöver.

Carbiotix CSO om nya rollen

BioStock kontaktade Stephen Bromley för att få en kommentar om det senaste halvåret och vad som ligger framför honom just nu.

Stephen, can you start by telling us a little about your background?

– My principal interests lie in microbiological issues, specifically microbial ecology from a molecular and biochemical perspective. Quite a few of my roles, however, have been interdisciplinary, in the sense I have taken learnings from challenges presented by the various roles I have accepted and transferred that knowledge into other spheres of the life sciences. For example, taking molecular learnings into cancer diagnostics as well as engineering apparatus for molecular biology.

So, in a nutshell, I am a microbiologist who has been heavily involved in biochemistry and molecular biology over the past 22 years. With the added benefit of working alongside a myriad of quality systems to achieve quality products.

If you look back at the last six months, how would you describe this period from your perspective?

– Hectic! With the opening of the new Bjuv facility, it is time for us all to embrace the new challenges of not only manufacturing a compound that has hitherto not been readily available in any great quantities for the consumer market but to develop various assays targeting the bacteria it affects.

– In relation to the former, it is actually quite a buzz to produce something like AXOS in such quantities especially when it has never really been done this way before.

What challenges and opportunities do you see in being both CTO and CSO for the company?

– Fortunately, I have a great team working alongside me, but from a personal perspective it is maintaining a finger on the pulse and satisfying client demands as well as coordinating manufacturing aspects.

– Again, being an interdisciplinarian in the life science field has helped me become more than a trick one-trick pony. I guess that is the advantage of getting older!

What are your main focus areas right now?

– My focus areas right now are the same as they have ever been, and that is constant optimisation, though primarily at the moment it is tinkering with the finer aspects of production at the Bjuv facility.

The production has just started at your facility in Bjuv – how will this benefit your current projects?

– AXOS AXOS AXOS! We are all about the fibre, almost evangelical, to the extent we want to prove to the world its efficacy as dictated by the application of our easy-to-understand NGS and PCR tests for detecting bacteria implicated in good gut health. To achieve the quantities required for the market, we need Bjuv to step in and produce our goal.

Finally, what do you hope to achieve in the coming six months?

– For me, it is developing on the regulatory approval of AXOS, first in the US and then eventually in Europe.

– From a scientific perspective, it is to formulate the most effective prebiotic fibre on the market hands down, with the added benefit of involving the general public in the scientific discussion around gut health and integrity – scientifically and morally!
