Carbiotix utvärderar nya fiberråvaror
Foodtech-bolaget Carbiotix är i full färd med att färdigställa sin första storskaliga produktionsenhet i Bjuv för sin prebiotiska modulator CarbiAXOS som idag produceras från majskli. Samtidigt meddelar bolaget att man inleder ett projekt som ska utvärdera möjligheten att tillverka modulatorn med fiber från produktionen av växtbaserade mejerialternativ som utgångsmaterial. BioStock fick en pratstund med vd Kristofer Cook.
Spotlight-listade Carbiotix utvecklar nästa generation prebiotiska modulatorer, CarbiAXOS, som ska förbättra tarmhälsan. Bolaget håller på att färdigställa sin första storskaliga produktionsanläggning och nyligen föreslog man en företrädesemission som ska ta in 20 Mkr för att fortsätta exekvera på sin marknadsplan. Bolaget annonserade även nyligen att CarbiAXOS ska ingå som medicinsk mat i en diabetesstudie som ska drivas av Lunds Universitetet under 2022. I en intervju med BioStock uppgav Kristofer Cook att studiematerialet kommer att produceras vid anläggningen i Bjuv och färdigställas av en lokal partner. Läs intervjun här.
Nytt utvärderingsprojekt
Samtidigt som stort fokus ligger på att färdigställa produktionsanläggningen, meddelade Carbiotix även att man inlett ett projekt som ska utvärdera andra råvarukällor än majskli som CarbiAXOS idag är tillverkad av.
I detta projekt samarbetar man med ett nordiskt kontraktstillverkningsbolag som producerar råvaror för växtbaserade alternativ till mejeriprodukter. I tillverkningen av växtbaserade mejeriprodukter uppkommer fibersidoprodukter som annars säljs som djurfoder eller till annan livsmedelsproduktion. Carbiotix vill nu alltså undersöka möjligheten att framställa CarbiAXOS från denna typ av råvara, något som skulle kunna göra bolaget mindre beroende av tillgången till majskli.

Kristofer, what advantages do you see with this type of side-stream fibre product compared to corn bran?
– In short, this type of side-stream fibre product will allow us to discover new prebiotic products, ensure raw material supply, focus more on sustainability, and explore different business models. Each new side-stream fibre will allow us to produce a new CarbiAXOS product with slightly different prebiotic and physical characteristics, thus helping us broaden our product portfolio.
– By sourcing the fibre locally, we will be able to hedge against corn bran supply disturbances, especially in light of current geopolitical events. Since the side-stream fibres are produced locally, one can argue that the CarbiAXOS raw material is sourced and sold locally, thus improving the carbon footprint of the product.
– Lastly, by working with existing food producers we will be able to explore different business models from supplying from many local partners, to new JV setups and licensing as a means to reduce capex requirements.
Are there any other industries that could provide similar opportunities as plant-based non-dairy alternatives?
– Sourcing from plant-based dairy alternatives by itself will provide a variety of different raw materials and thus new products.
– One could also see plant-based protein production as a source of fibre given the growth of this market both locally and globally. This is of course a source of fibre we are investigating today given our proximity to local producers.
– Lastly, first generation ethanol production is source of fibre raw material that we have proven is feasible in past and will continue to explore going forward both to lower overall production costs given its scale and leverage existing relationships in Europe and North America.
Finally, what do you expect to learn during this evaluation project?
