Carbiotix vd räknar med att nå milstolpar under 2022
Lundabolaget Carbiotix rapporterade för det fjärde kvartalet 2021, en period där bolaget koncentrerade sig på installationen av första produktionslinjen vid FoodHills i skånska Bjuv. Även om stort fokus låg på anläggningen, pågick även andra aktiviteter för att etablera bolagets prebiotiska modulator CarbiAxos på marknaden under 2022. BioStock kontaktade vd Kristofer Cook för en kommentar och en utblick mot kommande händelser.
Spotlight-noterade Carbiotix avlämnade nyligen sin delårsrapport för det fjärde kvartalet 2021. Bolaget redovisade en rörelseförlust om 3,2 Mkr, jämfört med en förlust om 2,1 kr under samma period 2020. Kassaflödet från den löpande verksamheten rapporterades till -4,7 Mkr och kassabehållningen vid årsskiftet uppgick till 7,3 Mkr.
Utveckling av smart prebiotics
I rapporten redogjorde Carbiotix för installationsarbetet av bolagets första produktionslinje av den prebiotiska modulatorn CarbiAXOS vid FoodHills anläggning i Bjuv i Skåne.
CarbiAXOS är nästa generation prebiotiska fiber för en mer hälsosam tarmmiljö. Modulatorn ska initialt vara en ingrediens i livsmedel, drycker och kosttillskott för att främja en god tarmhälsa, för att på sikt ingå i medicinsk mat och medicinska behandlingar. Anläggningen i Bjuv ska inledningsvis ha en tillverkningskapacitet om 10 ton per år för att inom något år kunna producera 100 ton per år av de majsklibaserade fibrerna.
De egenutvecklade modulatorerna i kombination med Carbiotix analystjänst LinkGut utgör hörnstenarna i bolagets Smart Prebiotics-koncept. Konceptet går ut på att en användare av LinkGut-tjänsten kan övervaka sin tarmhälsa över tid och dosera CarbiAXOS för att optimera balansen i magen.
Bolaget har även drivit vidare utvecklingen av LinkGut under fjärde kvartalet med ett pilotprojekt i samarbete med ett ledande globalt laboratorietestbolag. Projektet kommer att slutföras under 2022. Läs mer.
Omorganisering under 2022
I februari meddelade bolaget även att man utsett försäljningschefen Erik Deaner till Chief Operating Officer, en roll där han kommer att övervaka alla operativa verksamheter i bolaget. Samtidigt meddelade Carbiotix att Peter Falck lämnar sin roll som CSO vid bolagsstämman den 22 april, men kommer att fortsätta att stötta Carbiotix genom sin roll i styrelsen och som senior rådgivare till bolaget. Vid årsskiftet ägde Peter Falck 17,5 procent av aktierna i Carbiotix och är den näst största aktieägaren.
Högst upp på ägarlistan med 19,5 procent ligger vd Kristofer Cook, BioStock kontaktade honom för en kommentar om rapporten och utsikterna för 2022.
Kristofer, with a cash position of 7,3 MSEK at year-end a negative cash flow of 4,7 MSEK in the quarter – can you tell us about your financial plan for 2022?
– The negative cash flow in Q4 was a result of a net cash outlay of roughly 1.5 MSEK in connection with the installation of our first CarbiAXOS production line in Bjuv prior to the activation of a leasing agreement. This should be adjusted in Q1 once the leasing agreement is activated, thus having a positive impact on the cash position of the company in the quarter.
– Regarding our financial plan for 2022, we have not made any final decision and are evaluating different options. As always, our goal with any financial plan is to balance investor interests with that of the company and to provide the funds required to execute on our scale-up and growth strategy. 2022 will be an exciting year for Carbiotix and I look forward to reporting on our achievements as the year progresses as well as providing more clarity on our financial plan.
What is the reason behind Peter Falck leaving the role as CSO?
– The mutual decision for Peter Falck to leave the role of CSO was completely natural from both sides. As a close colleague, Peter and I have always had constructive discussions on how to develop and grow Carbiotix.
– At this time, we decided that the management team needed to be streamlined, hence our decision to promote Eric Deaner to COO and Stephen Bromley to combined CSO and CTO. This would allow for a greater commercial focus in preparation for the launch of CarbiAXOS. At the same time, Peter decided he would spend more time with start-up projects from Lund University thus strengthening our ties to the university.
– The most important thing for me was to ensure that Carbiotix would continue to receive the support it needed from Peter as a Board member and Senior Advisor while supporting Peter in his start-up projects, some of which could benefit Carbiotix going forward.
Will he be replaced?
– Peter will not be replaced given that his responsibilities have gone over to our CTO Stephen Bromley who was hired by Peter several years ago. Moreover, given that Peter will continue as a board member and Senior Advisor, I feel that Peter has really not left the company and will continue to support our growth simply in a different position.
Finally, in your CEO statement you were certain that Carbiotix will be able to go from the lab to production and sales during 2022 – what are the key elements in succeeding with this?
– In order to commence sales, we will need to fulfil several milestones as previously communicated.
– Firstly, we will need to complete and start-up our first CarbiAXOS production site in Bjuv.
– Secondly, we will need to achieve GRAS Self Affirmation for CarbiAXOS, allowing for sales in the US.
– Thirdly, we will need to secure our first sales agreement(s) locking in CarbiAXOS production capacity for nutraceutical products targeting the US market.
I am confident that we should be able to complete all of these milestones in 2022 in addition to making progress on many other activities related to IP, regulatory approvals, studies, LinkGut partners, and the development of new modulators across different classes.
